File this under the weirder announcement of an otherwise exciting humpday.
TV Newser has the press release that Glenn Beck‘s TheBlaze [sic] will be venturing into the realm of documentary programming, much like MSNBC and CNN before him.
Whereas the major cable networks skewed toward franchise series (Lockup, or any of Anderson Cooper’s reports), Beck is going a different route: he’s making a reality show first, producing a documentary second.
Pursuit of the Truth will be an nine-episode series airing exclusively on Beck’s TheBlaze chronicling the efforts of an unknown amount of documentarians hopeful to get their non-fiction vision for “the grand prize – financing and worldwide distribution for their feature documentary film idea.”
What else will the hopefuls have to do? Apparently, generic reality show things!
“If selected, contestants will be asked to perform a series of tasks during the ten-–-week production period for our panel of expert judges. Contestants will be asked to not only prove the validity of their idea for a documentary and but also their filmmaking abilities. They will either survive or be eliminated based on that criteria. For example, contestants might be asked to produce a sizzle reel, procure and execute a key interview, or pitch scenes to our panel of judges.”
The show’s currently looking for contestant/candidates and looking to premiere sometime in Spring 2013. Nothing seems set in stone when it comes to the promised distribution–does it include VOD? Does a theatrical mean an NY/LA four-wall? What about home video distribution? Does it get featured on TheBlaze? The FAQ isn’t answering.
If you’re unfamiliar with the co-producers, maybe you’ll know some of Go Go Luckey’s shows such as Paranormal State, Laguna Beach, Paranormal State The New Class, Cute And Furry My Ass [sic] and the always relevant Hot Girls in Scary Places. The other co-producer comes from Vince Vaughn’s Wild West Productions–responsible for, well, most of Vince Vaughn’s films.
We’re morbidly curious to see who applies and who winds up being accepted in the competition. Part of us wonders if Beck’s choice in producers–specifically their old ties to MTV and Viacom–influenced his decision to “get back” at a certain host whose Show airs Daily. In the mean time, the full release is pasted below for all your capital lettered needs:

Joel Cheatwood, President and Chief Content Officer for TheBlaze said: “We are excited to continue to expand our programming with producers like Vince Vaughn, Peter Billingsley and Gary Auerbach. The documentary film, particularly those that seek the truth with no agenda, is an important art form that is struggling to survive in this media environment. We will be looking for stories that simply need to be told.”
Peter Billingsley from Wild West Productions said: “We are thrilled to provide an opportunity for filmmakers. Getting any film beyond the idea stage has become increasingly difficult these days, especially for documentary filmmakers that want to shine a light and make a difference. Our goal is to create a powerful annual platform to help filmmakers tell important and engaging stories.”
Gary Auerbach, founder of Go Go Luckey said: “It has been our privilege to produce a long list of shows for a variety of networks and we are excited to now work on such an important show for TheBlaze. This project has special meaning for Go Go Luckey because it embodies such a worthy cause -–- enabling filmmakers to pursue the truth.”
Go Go Luckey will lead the production of the series in cooperation with Wild West Productions and TheBlaze. The nine episode series debuts on TheBlaze in late Spring 2013.
