WASHINGTON, D.C. — On the evening of September 15, the residence of German Ambassador Jens Hanefeld, became an unlikely showcase for what happens when artificial intelligence meets centuries of cultural heritage.

The German Embassy and Google Arts & Culture co-hosted an evening reception welcoming 100 members of Washington’s diplomatic corps, administration officials, and policy leaders as Google art kiosks lined the hall, each anchored to a different dimension of German cultural life. Canvas Legends, developed in partnership with the Gemäldegalerie, traced the arc of human experience through Old Masters from Botticelli to Vermeer. Mice in the Museum showed how Google Gemini can open unexpected and playful angles on the same collection. From Bach to Bauhaus aggregated art, history, and architecture from more than 160 German institutions into a single navigable experience. And The Twin Paradox, produced with the Münchner Symphoniker, offered perhaps the evening’s most striking demonstration — the Munich Symphony Orchestra fusing traditional composition with AI technology to push at the edges of what orchestral music can be.

Amit Sood is a Google vice president and the founder of Google Arts & Culture. He gave a briefing and the origin story of this global gift to the world.

Google vice president for public policy Karan Bhatia offered opening remarks describing the platform’s deep partnership with German cultural institutions. Washington AI Network founder Tammy Haddad moderated a panel conversation with Amit Sood and Jeni Barton, director of digital products at ArtsWave, who described how they work with artists and institutions. The reception that followed gave guests a firsthand look at what that intersection looks like in practice.

A Gemini-powered photo booth allowed guests remix their own image using Google’s AI image generation model, walking away with a printed photo strip as a souvenir.

Google Arts & Culture’s mission to make the world’s cultural heritage accessible to anyone, anywhere has been built through partnerships with more than 3,000 institutions across 80 countries. Monday evening was a reminder that in Washington, the most compelling argument for AI’s potential is sometimes not a policy paper but a painting, a symphony, and an open door.

Guests included Chance Coughenour, Linda Moore, Andy Baker, Lee Satterfield, Megan Beyer, Dawit Kahsai, Victoria Espinel, Maya Guthman, Sumi Somaskanda, Blake Brown, Tiffany Moore, Justin Kintz, Melika Carroll, and Julian Ramirez.
