Nate Silver To Break Internet Tomorrow During Reddit AMA

January 7, 2013 By WHC Insider

If you throw questions about narwhals and wizards at Nate Silver on the Internet, will he answer? At least he will tomorrow.

The FiveThirtyEight blogger/statician announced yesterday that he’ll be taking tomorrow on Reddit’s AMA. There’re already nine posts heralding the overlord of the Internet and wondering if he’ll answer whether he really is a witch. People like to speculate on Silver’s predictions being mixed with magic after late-night photos featuring one of the many hats he wears.

Yet Silver diving into the wild waters of an Ask Me Anything could be rough. He’s no stranger to taking on Jon Stewart or even an off-camera Mike Allen at a Google Talk last November. But can he take on the most annoying memes that the tiny white alien can offer? Let’s do some math!

  • Will Nate Silver Be Asked If He’s A Wizard?
    Odds: 0:1
It’s witch, not wizard. Redditors are touchy about their wordage.

  • Will Nate Silver Be Asked The “Woody Harrelson”?
    Odds: 2:1
When Woody Harrelson went on Reddit to talk about his 2011 film Rampart things took a quick turn south after a Redditor asked about a fake high school story. It showcased how the Internet isn’t traditional journalism–sometimes it’s just a guy trolling.

  • Will Nate Silver Rather Fight A Hundred Duck-Sized Horses or One Horse-Sized Duck?
    Odds: 2:8
Silver may answer the first, but this is the online equivalent of “how’s the weather?” Just ducky.

  • Will Nate Silver discuss baseball?
    Odds: …8:1?
    We’re terrible at math.

  • Will Nate Silver explain his magical superpowers?
    Odds: π:-π ?
He has. He even wrote a book about it.

There could be any number of things Reddit tries to ask Silver. And he may answer six or he could even go as far as 538 if he wanted to freak out the tea leaf readers. Check it out tomorrow at 2 pm and see if our odds-making was up to a Silver level.
