White House Communications Director Scaramucci Begins Purge of West Wing Staff

July 26, 2017 By WHC Insider

On Tuesday, White House communications director Anthony Scaramucci publicly threatened to fire his entire team in attempts to stop anonymous leaking coming from the West Wing.

“If they don’t stop leaking, I’m going to put them out on Pennsylvania Avenue – it’s a very clear thing,” Scaramucci said. “I’m going to fire everybody, that’s how I’m going to do it. You’re either going to stop leaking or you’re going to get fired.”

Asked about recent press reports suggesting he had already started purging staff members, Scarmucci singled out articles saying the communications director was on the verge of firing senior assistant press secretary Michael Short specifically. An article was posted on Politico hours earlier naming Short as the first on the list for upcoming staff purges.

“The fact that you guys know about it before he does really upsets me as a human being and as a Roman Catholic, you got that? So I should have the opportunity, if I have to let someone go, to let the person go in a very humane, dignified way,” Scaramucci stated.

Short resigned shortly after publication of the Politico article saying he was to be terminated, before being fired by Scaramucci.

New York Times Requests Retraction from Fox News for “Malicious” ISIS Story

July 24, 2017 By WHC Insider

On Sunday, the New York Times asked Fox News for an on-air retraction and apology, after a story aired that appeared to blame the paper for publishing intelligence information that the show claimed led to the escape of a top ISIS leader.

“I am writing on behalf of The New York Times to request an on-air apology and tweet from Fox & Friends in regards to a malicious and inaccurate segment ‘NY Times leak allowed ISIS leader to slip away,’” the letter to Fox News read.

The on-air segment in question aired Saturday during the morning program Fox & Friends and claimed ISIS leader al-Baghdadi was “able to sneak away in the cover of darkness after a New York Times story went to print in 2015.” The story was based off an article published Friday evening on Fox News’ website, co-written by national security reporter Catherine Herridge.

Later in the day, Fox News responded by noting the article by Herridge had been updated and accused the Times of “hyperventilating to the media about a correction.” In a statement, the network said that “the New York Times didn’t reach out to anyone at Fox News until Sunday afternoon for a story that ran Friday night.”

President Donald Trump tweeted about the Fox News story on Saturday:

The Failing New York Times foiled U.S. attempt to kill the single most wanted terrorist,Al-Baghdadi.Their sick agenda over National Security

— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) July 22, 2017

The Times noted in an article on Sunday that the Pentagon itself issued a press release containing the intelligence information three weeks before the article was published in the newspaper in 2015. “No senior American official complained publicly about the story until now, more than two years later.” The paper also noted the Pentagon was aware of the details of the article before publication and did not object.

Scaramucci Expected To Be Named White House Communications Director

July 21, 2017 By WHC Insider

Multiple news agencies are reporting Friday morning that President Donald Trump has selected his close friend and ally, Wall Street financier Anthony Scaramucci, to be the new White House communications director.

The director position has been vacant since May, when Mike Dubke resigned after only three months on the job. Since then, press secretary Sean Spicer has assumed most of the responsibilities of this position. NBC News and Axios both report that sources say Spicer is expected to stay on as press secretary.

Scaramucci is a former Goldman Sachs banker and was a member of Trump’s transition team. He is a major Republican donor, having held fundraisers for Scott Walker and Jeb Bush during the 2016 presidential primary, and supported Trump in the general election last year. Known as “Mooch” to his friends, he is a regular guest on Fox News and longtime friend of Sean Hannity.

Survey Finds Republicans Trust Trump, Democrats Trust CNN

July 6, 2017 By WHC Insider

A new survey released by SurveyMonkey suggests that 89% of Republicans see President Donald Trump as more trustworthy as CNN, while 91% of Democrats hold the opposite opinion.  Independent voters are more split, with 55% choosing CNN, compared to the 40% that trust Trump more.

While the survey also shows that 64% of all adults disapprove of Trump’s use of Twitter, Jon Cohen, senior vice president of survey research at SurveyMonkey, said that:

“A red flag for Democrats continues to be a perception that Trump is isolating himself from the GOP base with his tweets.  Not only do most Republicans approve of his use of Twitter, but asked to describe those tweets, the No. 1 mention among the GOP is ‘truthful,’ with ‘entertaining’ in second place.”

Survey results also noted a danger for Republicans remaining content ignoring media outlets not frequented by their base.  Fully one-third of Republican respondents said they only get their news from Fox News.  Cohen explained further that:

“…the biggest danger for Republicans is that they grow content with firing up the base: Fully three-quarters of pure independents (those that don’t lean one way or the other) disapprove of Trump’s tweeting, and their top three descriptions for it are ‘undignified,’ ‘mean,’ and ‘dishonest.’”

SurveyMonkey conducted their poll online between June 29 and July 3, with a margin of error of +/- 2.5 percent.  4,965 adults participated in the survey.

Press Invited, Disinvited From First Trump Re-Election Fundraiser

June 29, 2017 By WHC Insider

Only hours of announcing the media would be permitted to cover President Donald Trump’s first fundraiser for his re-election campaign in 2020, the White House reversed itself and closed the event to the media.

Deputy press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders emailed reporters stating that “unfortunately there was some confusion with the [Republican National Committee] and due to the logistical challenges bringing in the press at this late moment is not going to be possible.”
The event was originally listed as closed press, but Sanders announced after inquiries from reporters that a small press pool would be allowed to cover the President’s remarks.

Within two hours, the event was again closed to press. There was no explanation from the White House on the reversal, nor an explanation of what logistical challenges were present in hosting the media.

Former President Barack Obama had allowed members of the media to cover his remarks during fundraisers for himself or other candidates, although cameras were generally banned. In some cases, Obama would hold fundraising events entirely off limits to the press. In those situations, he was not delivering formal remarks, but instead taking questions from donors. These discussions with donors were always closed to reporters.

Former President George W. Bush also allowed the media to cover portions of his first re-election fundraiser.

President Trump Again Lashes Out At Media On Twitter

June 28, 2017 By WHC Insider

On Tuesday night, President Donald Trump unleashed a flurry of tweets on his personal Twitter account lashing out at the mainstream media, calling them “fake news.”

Possibly originating from an undercover conservative sting video that captured a recording of a CNN health news producer criticizing his network’s political coverage of the Russian involvement in the 2016 election as “bull—t”, Trump accused the network of falling ratings.

Fake News CNN is looking at big management changes now that they got caught falsely pushing their phony Russian stories. Ratings way down!

— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) June 27, 2017

Nielsen has reported CNN viewership has increased 10 percent year-over-year, according to ratings from the second quarter released on Tuesday.

President Trump continued tweeting on this topic to criticize other media outlets such as NBC, ABC, Washington Post and the New York Times.

So they caught Fake News CNN cold, but what about NBC, CBS & ABC? What about the failing @nytimes & @washingtonpost? They are all Fake News!

— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) June 27, 2017

The president concluded this topic on Twitter with another attack on the New York Times, again labeling the newspaper’s coverage of his administration “fake news.”

The failing @nytimes writes false story after false story about me. They don’t even call to verify the facts of a story. A Fake News Joke!

— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) June 28, 2017

The New York Times reported total revenue of $399 million for the first quarter of 2017, up 5 percent from the same period in 2016. Its net income was about $13 million, compared with a net loss of roughly $14 million in the same period the year prior.

White House Correspondents’ Association Not Satisfied with Off-Camera Briefings

June 26, 2017 By WHC Insider

Jeff Mason, president of the White House Correspondents’ Association, has announced the organization is “not satisfied” with the halt of daily, televised and recorded White House press briefings.

The White House press team has frequently cancelled or modified daily briefings, such as hosting off-camera sessions, forbidding the use of audio from the briefings, or cancelling them all together on certain days.

“The WHCA’s position on this issue is clear: we believe strongly that Americans should be able to watch and listen to senior government officials face questions from an independent news media, in keeping with the principles of the First Amendment and the need for transparency at the highest levels of government,” Mason said in an email to members of the association.

Members of the White House staff have publicly suggested changes in the daily briefings, and have already changed several aspects from the traditional setting. Changes such as “Skype Seats” where reporters and talk show hosts from across the country are able to ask questions, have been included in some briefings.

Press secretary Sean Spicer defended the administration’s changes and potential alterations to the format of the briefings. “We’re going to do what we can to communicate our message,” Spicer said at Tuesday’s briefing when asked about the frequency of press briefings. “The briefing is one aspect of what we do.”

Correspondents Criticize White House Press Briefings

June 20, 2017 By WHC Insider

White House correspondents Monday publicly blasted press secretary Sean Spicer and the administration’s communications team for increasingly conducting off-camera questions-and-answers instead of the standard publicly broadcast press briefings.

Spicer has not held a publicly broadcast White House press briefing in over a week, as Monday he told the press cameras and audio recordings were not permitted throughout the proceedings.

CNN’s Jim Acosta took to the airwaves to criticize this decision by the administration:

“The White House press secretary is getting to a point where he’s just kind of useless. If they’re getting to this point where he’s not going to answer questions or go on camera or have audio, why are we even having these briefings or gaggles in the first place?”

During the briefing, Zeke Miller of Time Magazine challenged Spicer to answer “why our friends in radio and television can’t use this [briefing] live.”
Spicer’s response was that President Trump had made public comments during a photo opportunity with Panamanian President Juan Carlos Varela, and would again later in the day during a meeting at a technology council meeting.

There were no opportunities during either event for the media to ask President Trump any questions.

During the un-televised and un-recorded press briefing, press secretary Spicer also refused to take questions from CNN’s Acosta. The president and administration has pushed back frequently against stories critical of the administration on CNN, labeling the network as “fake news.”

“It’s off camera and you can’t answer questions?” Acosta yelled toward Spicer as the press secretary walked out of the briefing room.

Call me old fashioned but I think the White House of the United States of America should have the backbone to answer questions on camera.

— Jim Acosta (@Acosta) June 19, 2017

There is a suppression of information going on at this WH that would not be tolerated at a city council mtg or press conf with a state gov.
