Chefs Move! to Schools

June 4, 2010 By WHC Insider

Rachael Ray, in Washington a month ago for the WHCD, returns to help First Lady Michelle Obama teach kids about healthy eating

School may soon be out for the summer, but First Lady Michelle Obama has a lesson for hundreds of chefs around the country: healthy eating = healthy kids.

That simple equation means a big assignment for celebrity chefs, culinary experts and cooks who are being recruited for the “Chefs Move! to Schools” program, part of “Let’s Move!” – the First Lady’s initiative aimed at fighting childhood obesity within a generation. The adopt-a-school program will pair a cooking expert with a public school in order to teach students about nutrition and healthy eating.

Some familiar faces are helping to kick-off the program this afternoon on the White House South Lawn. POLITICO reports Rachael Ray will be on hand, as well as other Food Network stars including: Cat Cora, Anne Burrell, Aaron Sanchez, Ellie Krieger and Alex Guarnaschell.

Watch the event LIVE at 12:30PM EDT here on WHCInsider.com.

Steve Jobs: All Things Digital

June 2, 2010 By WHC Insider

Apple CEO Steve Jobs wowed the crowd at The Wall Street Journal’s 8th D: All Things Digital conference in Rancho Palos Verdes, California. In 2007, when Jobs last spoke to All Things Digital conference attendees, the world hadn’t touched an iPhone or imagined the iPad. What a difference a few years can make.

Check out what Jobs had to say in these clips of his speech to this year’s sold out D8 conference, including his thoughts on the smartphone market and the love hate relationship Apple has with Adobe’s Flash.

The three-day conference brings top innovators to the table to discuss media and technology – but this is Southern California, after all, so they also let their hair down at the AOL after party. Check out the photos of movie moguls and top tech geeks, including FCC Chairman Julius Genachowski, Rupert and Wendi Murdoch, Arianna Huffington, Eric Hippeau, Tim Armstrong, and Jennifer Khoury, enjoying a set from Natasha Bedingfield.

White House Rock

June 2, 2010 By WHC Insider

President Barack Obama will be striking up the band tonight when he presides over an all-star tribute to Sir Paul McCartney at the White House. The famed Beatle is being honored with the Library of Congress’ Gershwin Prize for Popular Song.

The prize, named after the American songwriting team of brothers George and Ira Gershwin (“I Got Rhythm,” “S’Wonderful”), celebrates McCartney’s fifty years in the music business. 2009 Gershwin Prize winner Stevie Wonder will be on hand to mark the occasion, as will Herbie Hancock, Elvis Costello, and the Jonas Brothers (who dazzled fans with a free concert at Warner Theatre early this morning).

McCartney is the first non-American to receive the prize after Wonder in 2009 and Paul Simon in 2007. Tonight’s concert will be televised on July 28.

Al and Tipper Gore Separate

June 1, 2010 By WHC Insider

Al and Tipper Gore announced to friends on Tuesday via e-mail they are separating after 40 years of marriage.

POLITICO obtained a copy of the e-mail and Kalee Kreider of the office of Al and Tipper Gore confirmed the news.

Here is an excerpt:
“This is very much a mutual and mutually supportive decision that we have made together following a process of long and careful consideration. We ask for respect for our privacy and that of our family, and we do not intend to comment further.”

The former Vice President, 62, and his wife, 61, have four children and just celebrated their 40th anniversary on May 19th.

The Twitter-sphere has been abuzz since the story broke and “Tipper Gore” is now a trending topic worldwide. Reactions range from shocked to snarky, and these are just a preview of what we surely can expect to hear in those the late night talk show monologues.

@funnyordie Al & Tipper Gore are calling it quits after 40 years. Expect a powerpoint movie about the inconvenient truth of divorce rates in the US.

@davidcanter Now that Tipper Gore is leaving Al Gore, will she get half the Internet?

@blujones Al and Tipper Gore are splitting up, which once again proves just how right Kermit was when he said, “it ain’t easy being green”.

GOP To Tampa In 2012

May 12, 2010 By WHC Insider

Get ready to pack the sunscreen.

The Republican National Committee announced today that the 2012 Republican National Convention will be held in Tampa-St. Petersburg once the site city agreement is fully negotiated and the full RNC votes for approval this August at its Summer Meeting.

“We are honored and privileged to accept the bid from Tampa, Florida to host the Republican National Convention in 2012. The host committee’s hard work and dedication resulted in a tremendous bid that we are confident will produce a successful event. The Tampa area boasts state-of-the-art facilities, exciting and vibrant downtowns, and a clear enthusiasm from the community to host our convention. We look forward to joining our compatriots in the Sunshine State for our convention in 2012,” said RNC Chairman Michael Steele.

POLITICO’s Mike Allen reported earlier today that top Republicans would recommend Tampa as the host city, beating out Phoenix, AZ and Salt Lake City, UT. The convention will be held the week of August 27, 2012.

Celebrating All Moms

May 10, 2010 By WHC Insider

Nicholas Kristof, New York Times columnist and co-author of “Half the Sky: Turning Oppression Into Opportunity for Women Worldwide,” used his latest post to remind us all that Mother’s Day is more than just flowers and breakfast in bed.

The column names organizations that are helping to make motherhood safer including White Ribbon Alliance and CARE, part of the coalition that makes up Mothers Day Every Day.

The 2010 WHC Garden Brunch helped raised awareness for maternal mortality and the role mothers play in not only building families but in fostering communities worldwide.

Here is a video with some of the motherly advice shared by a few guests at the brunch.
