On the latest episode of Bloomberg’s Masters in Politics, Tammy Haddad and Betsy Fischer Martin go in-depth on the 2016 race with longtime Democratic strategist and political analyst Donna Brazile. In the increasingly bitter match-up between Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders, Brazile thinks that things are “now taking a turn for the worse” with critiques from both campaigns about the other candidate’s qualifications to be president.

Despite the downward turn the race has taken, Brazile thinks that the Democrats will have a better chance at rallying around whichever candidate wins the nomination. “The race has become very, very contentious, very, very competitive, but I think at the end of the day the Democratic Party will unify and come together like gumbo with a good brew versus the Republicans who I think will continue to keep it up and scramble around and basically lose their ability to bring their party together after their convention.”

Brazile thinks that “Donald Trump chose the perfect year to run for office,” and that he has “taken the Republican Party by storm” at a time when “the base of the party was quite disillusioned with Washington, DC. They’re tired of business as usual, they feel betrayed by the status quo. So I’m not surprised that Donald Trump has been able to energize not just the base of the Republican Party but also Independents and some disaffected Democrats.”
