Petraeus Makes A Black Ops Cameo, Too

November 15, 2012 By WHC Insider

David Petraeus' cameo in Call of Duty: Black Ops 2
If the comparisons to the Coen Brothers‘ Burn After Reading weren’t enough for the ongoing Petraeus scandal, how about we get to see his face as a soulless digital avatar as well? Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 ,a sequel to the 2010 spin-off in the Call of Duty franchise focusing on the cold war, came out earlier in the week. In traditional Beltway culture, players assume the role of the same character twice (both father in the 1980s and son in the 2025) while blowing up drug lords, piloting drones and doing everything possible to keep firing a gun from point A to point B.

Except (SPOILER) toward the end of the campaign in 2025, we get a surprise cameo from (fictional) General Petraeus as he oversees the joint-adventure between Chinese and American militaries in lieu of any upcoming cyber-attacks with a motion-captured (and D.C. native) Tony Todd.

As for what’s exactly happening in the video, it really could matter less since we all know Petraeus won’t be in this role in the next 13 years. If he had, Petraeus would’ve seen the end to “The Second Cold War,” a female president and all sorts of impossible battlefield decisions made by a group of 12-year olds hopped up on Mountain Dew and candy that probably assume he’s just a made-up character for the Call of Duty franchise.

However, he is the first “living” government figure to be used in the series, disregarding the first Black Ops that featured a painfully awkward Jack Kennedy impersonator. But it did involve a mode where certain world leaders banded together inside the Pentagon to take down zombies:

Petraeus Resigns After Probe Discovers Affair

November 9, 2012 By WHC Insider

Barely a month ago, General David Petraeus and his wife Holly attended the premiere of Argo posing with Bryan Cranston and having the Breaking Bad actor leave his daughter a voice mail from the reception. That was the good news. The bad news: the general resigned his position as head of the CIA earlier this afternoon according to NBC News.

An FBI probe had uncovered that Petraeus had been compromised by his own biographer, Paula Broadwell, author of “All In: The Education of General David Petraeus,” who had tried to gain access to his email and other sensitive information. Slate named her as the other half of the affair that was uncovered by the FBI probe.

Broadwell made the media rounds earlier this year, including an odd interview with The Daily Show that becomes extremely cringeworthy toward the end. She recently published “David Petraeus’ Rules for Living” on The Daily Beast. Likewise, in hindsight, the fourth rule seems to come at an awkward time for the former director of the CIA:

There is an exception to every rule, standard operating procedure, and policy; it is up to leaders to determine when exceptions should be made and to explain why they made them.

Ben Affleck and General David Petraeus at ARGO Premiere

October 12, 2012 By Tammy Haddad

The Embassy of Canada was ground zero for spooks, State Department officials and some of the best actors in Hollywood, Ben Affleck, John Goodman, Bryan Cranston and even Jennifer Garner. Time Warner’s Carol Melton along with the Canadian Ambassador welcomed the star-studded crowd that included Robert Anders, a consular officer at the U.S. embassy 33 years ago, who along with 5  American Embassy colleagues hid at the Canadian Ambassador’s Tehran residence until they could be slipped out of Tehran after the Embassy was overtaken.

Tony Mendez, the CIA agent who created an almost laughable but effective path to sneak the six Americans out of the country, received a big welcome from Ben Affleck.  Mr. Affleck spoke with pride about the joy of bringing this almost unknown great chapter in American Canadian cooperation to life.  He introduced CIA Director General David Petraeus and his wife Holly, saying he was “honored to be in the room with him.”

Actor Bryan Cranston was overheard taping a video greeting to the Petraeus’s daughter who could not attend the event.

Guests included the State Department’s Huma Abedin and husband, former Congressman Anthony Weiner who pointed out Huma got a screen credit in the film. CIA General Counsel Stephen Preston, NYT’s Maureen Dowd, PBS’s Gwen Ifill and Lisa Davis, Investigative reporter Mark Hosenball and AP’s Kimberly Dozier were part of the packed house.  Media favorites Men’s Health’s Marc Adelman, the Washington Post’s Amy Argetsinger, RNC flack Sean Spicer, Senator Boxer’s Laura Schiller, CNN’s Joe Johns and Sam Feist sipped water and ate up the popcorn and the story of a successful American CIA mission. Part of the film was shot at the State Department and the actors visited CIA headquarters.

June 7, 2012 By WHC Insider

Washington came together at the Jefferson Hotel to welcome, remember, congratulate, and celebrate Mark Shriver and the book he wrote about his beloved father, Sargent Shriver. Fred Ryan, President and CEO of Politico, vice-chairman of Allbritton Communications and Chairman of the Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation began the program by welcomed guests and congraulated Mark on his book’s contribution to history. CURE Epilepsy Founder, Susan Axelrod introduced Shriver, whom she met on a plane with Vice President Biden after her daughter, Lauren, competed in the Special Olympics.  Many elected officials, policy makers, and media attended including House Minority Whip Steny Hoyer and Rep. Chris Von Hollen, Senator Bob Casey and former Senator Chris Dodd, HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius, Molly Elkin, Holly Page, Susanna and Jack Quinn, FOX’s Ed Henry, NBC’s Luke Russert, Peter Alexander, Geoff Morell and Kelley O’Donnell!

“A Good Man: Rediscovering My Father Sargent Shriver” is a heart-tugging inside story of the trusted member of  the Kennedy family, a man dedicated to doing good and a father who lifted the world with his big heart. Mark told the crowd:

“He clearly had the ability to balance his faith, his family, his friends, his commitment to the community, his commitment to the world. And for me, struggling how to balance all of that, how to raise three kids, how to deal with aging parents, how to have friends, and make a commitment to God and still try to do something with my life, I decided to dig in and try to figure out what dad’s secrets were, and that’s what this book really is.”

Kristina Schake Joins as First Lady's Communications Director

November 22, 2010 By WHC Insider

Kristina Schake

Even after Susan Sher left the White House last week to return to Chicago, we can welcome a new transplant to the Beltway: Kristina Schake, co-founder of communications firm Griffin|Schake, joins the administration as First Lady Michelle Obama’s communications director.

From a press release sent out this morning:

“I’m thrilled to welcome Kristina to the team.  Kristina brings a wealth of expertise that I know will make her a tremendous asset in the East Wing,” said First Lady Michelle Obama.  “Kristina has done extensive work throughout her career on child nutrition and community health issues, and that paired with her experience as part of a military family will bring invaluable insight to our work on childhood obesity and our efforts to support military families.  I look forward to working with Kristina on these efforts and more in the months and years ahead.”

Schake isn’t a stranger to working for powerful heads of state as she worked with former First Lady of California Maria Shriver among tackling obesity issues, “stem cell research and early childhood education a national priority and helped change California’s political landscape on renewable energy and civil rights.”

We can expect to see Schake around Capitol Hill starting in December.

The Day After Mid-Terms: Dems Retain Senate, GOP Moves Into House

November 3, 2010 By WHC Insider

Now that the countdown for Election 2012 (733 days and counting) is kicked off the a GOP takeover of the House and the Democrats keeping the Senate; today is ripe for figuring out what happened the last few months.

ABC News’ The Note sees this as coming full circle since 2008:

In the course of one night, critical gains Democrats had made in Congress over the course of two years were erased as the party in control of the White House suffered a painful loss of nearly 60 seats. As of this morning there were still 15 seats that have not been called — all of them currently held by Democrats. The GOP is likely to pick up some of those, bringing the total number of seats gained by Republicans even higher.

Not to mention this election cycle proved the strength of the “angry vote” over the fabled “youth vote,” which was shockingly absent compared to 2008. CBS News reports that the kids weren’t all right at the polling place and voting was down 18 percent  among 18-to-29-year olds. This year? The “youth vote” comprised nine percent of total voting percentage.

The New York Times rings in with the basic question: was hoping for change too ambitious from a country that can’t wait?

The most pressing question as Mr. Obama picks through the results on Wednesday morning will be what lessons he takes from the electoral reversals. Was this the natural and unavoidable backlash in a time of historic economic distress, or was it a repudiation of a big-spending activist government? Was it primarily a failure of communications as the White House has suggested lately, or was it a fundamental disconnect with the values and priorities of the American public?

For a full list of the Senatorial, Gubernatorial and House races, ABC News has the voting results as they come in.

Jon Meacham Joins Random House

October 21, 2010 By WHC Insider

Jon Meacham

Jon Meacham

The collective shout of joy from political reporters around the Beltway is well deserved: Jon Meacham’s an editor once again.

The ex-Newsweek editor joins Random House as Executive Vice President and Executive Editor according to a press release published today via the AP. Mike Allen fleshed it out a bit more in his Playbook citing the new role will start in 2011. More important?

Washington now has a powerful new friend in New York publishing. Meacham will have a big checkbook and a huge appetite for great political books, but with high standard (will only take on three or so books a year, which means lots of retail attention to the authors he chooses to work with). A longtime observer of the New York/Washington literary world, when he heard the announcement: “Meacham just became arguably the most influential nonfiction editor in American letters.”

Meacham’s own catalog at Random House includes American Lion on the life of President Andrew Jackson, which also took the Pulitzer Prize.
